Christmas Party

For our Christmas party we didn’t have a featured artist of the month, instead all the acts were simply asked to perform a seasonally related song of their choice. Appropriately the snow was falling and as the audience tucked into their mince pies and ales, they sat back to enjoy a festive treat. Belle Humble sang “Last Christmas”, Alone Trooper gave us a unique rendition of “Lonely This Christmas” and Paul Hawkins played a completely Christmas themed set performing a gypsy carol called “Awake Awake” (that God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is based on), “Remember Bethlehem” by Jake Thackray and his own “I’ll Be Getting A Divorce for Christmas”.
Paul wasn’t alone in performing a Christmas song he’d written himself, Man Or Mouse played their “Christmas Wish List” and The Lucky Face sang “Murder at Christmas” both with humorous yet very different takes on the theme.

Hearing that so many acts were planning to do their own Christmas songs I became inspired and in the days leading up to the gig was determined to try and write my own Christmas song. Once i’d come up with the line “The Muslims and the Jews will get a holiday too, cos most employers say they have too.” the rest sort of fell into place and after a couple of rehearsals with The Reverse we debuted our new song “First Christmas” which we (somewhat bizarrely) insisted on segueing into “Santa Claus is Coming To Town”.
My Mate George finished the night off putting a smile on everyone’s face with some serious Kazoo action on “Stop The Cavalry” and then led the audience in a rousing rendition of “War Is Over”.
