About

Fast becoming North London’s premier acoustic night, “Under the Influence” @ the Boogaloo has really taken off in the last six months.

Essentially it’s a showcase for talented new songwriters to perform their own songs, yet there is a twist. Each month, every act that performs, plays two of their own songs and one cover version by the featured artist of the month.

Since it began in June 2010 there have been nights dedicated to Leonard Cohen, Morrissey, Lou Reed, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave, Nina Simone, Captain Beefheart, The Specials & Jacques Brel.

The night has started to attract a huge crowd each month and has seen increasingly varied and exciting acts performing; from the dark anti-folk of David Cronenberg’s Wife & acoustic punk of The Lucky Face right through to the whisky stained croon of Tom Mckean & the Emperors and the sublime vocals of Betty Steeles, there is something for everyone.

The night was the brainchild of Nathan Loughran (AKA: Nat the Hammer), who comperes the event and has played at every night so far. Nat also performs in the North London based indie band, The Reverse, who are currently working on their debut album.

Nat explains,

“The idea was to try and create an atmosphere where acts and audience felt part of a community and were supportive towards one another. We’ve all played gigs where acts turn up, play to their mates and leave before the next act goes on. The covers theme provides a connection between all the acts playing, even though they are often very diverse in style and approach.”

“Under the Influence” takes place the third Monday of every month at The Boogaloo.
